Veraison in the vineyard
July 26th, 2008 by Ana Keller
Last night I took a long stroll through our lower areas in the La Cruz Vineyard. Veraison is well under way in most blocks. For those of you who aren“t familiar with this term, veraison refers to the coloring of the Pinot Noir and Syrah grapes. It is important for many reasons: birds! Being surrounded by cattle in the Petalum area we have an abundance of grains, and well, birds actually like grapes better than grains, so we net all our vineyards to protect the fruit from birds pecking at it. Once the fruit starts coloring, then the birds start attacking. On the other hand, it is also an important indicator that ripening of the fruit has begun and that we must pay close attention to this progression.
Other than that I am happy to report the vineyard is in excellent health and we look forward to a cool August month. Hopefully our club members who come on August 9th to our appreciation day will take a walk in the vineyard with me and taste some fruit. Have a great saturday!
